Artist Aurore Petit is focusing for this 3rd title about her family series on her “big little girl”, hence ending her autobiographical work – for the time being. With infinite tenderness, she describes this tricky period when little children become more independent and push further and further their limits: the famous terrible two! The little girl introduces the reader to her universe; her own self-conscience goes through opposition but also a strong affirmation of her capacities and her choices. She is slowly but surely leaving the world of babies, meanwhile forging her identity and personality. A grown-up is always figured by her side to accompany her on the sometimes-complex path of autonomy, but mostly out of frame, figured by a pair of arms or feet. This permanent discrepancy between text and image reinforces the child’s touching awkwardness and makes the whole matter sweet and very funny.
